I’ve been massaging now for 17 years and am still amazed at the restorative effects of massage. Here are just some of the reasons I’m a huge believer that massage is one of the best investments you’ll ever make for your health.

  1. Massage for Healing:  From as early as 3000 BCE by the Egyptians, then in India, China, Japan, Greece and Rome (think Gladiators) to maintain a healthy body.  Hippocrates’, who is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine was a great advocate of massage to improve health.
  2. Much more than a ‘Back Rub’:  With an experienced therapist you will experience real changes to an injury and/or your sense of wellness.massage-for-neck-pain
  3. Relieves Muscle Tension:  You know the ones – headache, back pain, hurts to move a particular way all of which is exhausting and frustrating.  Sure you can stretch but targeting just the right muscles to relieve the problem can be nigh on impossible.  My clients call it the ‘good hurt’ when I zero in on those pesky muscles and they feel them release!  Hearing things like ‘I reversed out the drive and realised for the first time in months my neck didn’t hurt’ is why I love my job!
  4. Increases Joint Mobility and Flexibility: Pretty much for all the same reasons as above. With muscles released and blood flowing freely through them the joints are nourished and range of movement increases.  I can’t promise you will end up like this, but I do know with massage and a home stretching program you will be able to improve – just like a fine wine!
  5. Improves Circulation:  With the pressure and release techniques of remedial massage blood moves through the Remedial-Massage---Dump-Truckcongested areas where metabolic waste has formed which stops the muscle working effectively.  Once the pressure is released fresh blood, which brings in oxygen and nutrients is able to flow into this area which facilitates healing.  Think of a little dump truck coming in to extract waste and deposit all the ingredients to promote a healthy living environment.
  6. Speeds up Lymphatic System:  Our white blood cells are produced and transported via the lymph system making it an important part of our immune system.  The technique of stimulating and relaxing muscles during remedial massage promotes the healthy functioning of your lymph system. The lymph works hand in hand with our circulatory system to remove waste so when, for example, unneeded material is absorbed by the muscles, lymph fluid carries it away to the lymph nodes where it is ingested, also old red blood cells and dead germs are collected and removed from the body.   As you can see this detoxing effect is another great benefit of having a massage, just remember to have a few glasses of water before your nightly tipple!
  7. Relieve Stress:  High blood pressure is associated with elevated anxiety, stress and stress hormones, hostility, depression and catecholamines (cause fight or flight response).  A study in the year 2000 showed massage therapy decreased diastolic blood pressure, reduced depression and hostility and showed decreased cortisol (stress hormone)¹.

Remedial massage is an effective treatment for soft tissue injuries, stiff muscles or ligaments, joint problems and sport injures.  Muscles and ligaments will sometimes become tight and sore, knotted or damaged because of stress, overuse and repetitive actions. Our remedial massage treatment focuses on specific areas by using deep and effective muscle compression, muscle lubricating, passive stretching and stroking to relieve muscle tension.
Remedial massage can be used to treat numerous muscles, tendons, ligament problems, such as tight shoulder, lower back pain, headaches, arthritis, tennis elbow, scoliosis, muscular sprains and body fatigue syndromes. Also is good on relieving body chronic pain.
Taking the time to have a regular massage is important. Clients receiving regular massage respond with lowered respiratory rate, lowered blood pressure readings, lowered pain, and an increase in range of movement.
While massage treatment may be a key way to relieve aches and pains, there’s no denying excellent massage also brings a relaxation experience to your life.

These days remedial massage therapists will be found working with elite athletes, ballerinas, opera singers, weekend warriors and everyday folk across the world.
